The Ondo State Government on Friday disbursed N38 million as medical assistance to 39 residents of the state under its Medical Assistance Programme.
Speaking at the event in Akure, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, said the initiative reflects government’s commitment to supporting residents who cannot afford their medical bills.
Ajaka assured that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration prioritizes the well-being of citizens.
“This programme is part of the social welfare package under the Ease Agenda of the present administration. Some of the beneficiaries have kidney-related problems.
“There is a board through which applications are submitted, examined and processed diligently. Out of 54 applicants, 39 were approved after careful screening. The process is transparent and without bias,” he explained.
The commissioner urged residents to embrace the state’s contributory health insurance scheme, stressing that it allows access to healthcare services without out-of-pocket expenses.
“You don’t need cash in hand to benefit. Even surgeries are covered, with costs shared between government and patients in a 60:40 ratio.
“Under the Abiyamo scheme for maternal and child health, delivery—whether vaginal or cesarean—is provided free of charge once you are registered,” Ajaka added.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Adeniran Ikuomola, appreciated Governor Aiyedatiwa for approving and releasing the funds.
“He has consistently supported medical assistance programmes since assuming office. We encourage all residents to key into the contributory health insurance scheme to enjoy sustainable access to healthcare,” Ikuomola said.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Caroline Jimoh, expressed gratitude, describing the intervention as timely.
“Many of us had given up on treatment because of lack of money. This gesture has restored our hope,” she said.
