Residents of Yidna community in Shiroro Local Government Area have been urged to take full responsibility for the newly rehabilitated Primary Health Care Centre to ensure its protection and long-term sustainability, as the Niger State Primary Health Care Development Agency (NSPHCDA) officially handed over the facility to the community.
The Executive Director of NSPHCDA, Dr. Junaidu Inuwa, who performed the handover, said the rehabilitation of the health centre formed part of the Niger State Government’s efforts under Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s New Niger Agenda and the health sector reforms being driven by the Commissioner for Primary Health Care, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, to improve access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural communities.
Inuwa said the future expansion of services at the facility would depend largely on the community’s commitment to protecting the infrastructure and making effective use of the centre. He assured residents that the Agency would provide additional equipment and other support if the facility was properly maintained and well utilised. He also donated essential medical consumables to enhance healthcare delivery.
The Director of Primary Health Care in Shiroro Local Government Area, Iliyasu Ibrahim Baidna, disclosed that the renovation of the Yidna Primary Health Care Centre was the first assignment undertaken by the Executive Director after assuming office on February 2, 2026, following media reports that exposed the poor condition of the facility.
He said the intervention, facilitated by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago through the Commissioner for Primary Health Care, had transformed the once-neglected health centre into a functional facility serving Yidna and neighbouring communities.
Representing the Chairman of Shiroro Local Government, the Supervisory Councillor, Isyaku Aminu Chichido, described the rehabilitation as the first intervention of its kind in the area and commended the state government for strengthening healthcare services in rural communities.
He appealed to residents to safeguard the facility and support health workers to ensure effective service delivery.
The Village Head of Yidna, Mohammed Madaki, pledged that residents would protect the health centre and make proper use of its services.
Also speaking, Hauwa Abdullahi expressed gratitude to the government, noting that women in the community previously travelled about five kilometres to access medical care but could now receive healthcare closer to home.
She described the rehabilitation as a major relief, particularly for pregnant women and children.
