The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to unite in the campaign to combat diabetes.
Mr. Ahmad Tijjani, the agency’s Director in Jigawa, made the call in a statement issued on Monday in Dutse by Sarah Ogodo, Head of Media and Communication.
Tijjani spoke at an event to mark the 2025 World Diabetes Day, themed “Diabetes Across Life Stages.”
He said the event was organized to raise awareness about diabetes by promoting understanding and prevention.
The director noted that the campaign seeks to unite communities, healthcare professionals and individuals globally to tackle diabetes. He added that it focuses on strengthening integrated care for diabetes management, promoting healthy workplaces and encouraging balanced lifestyles.
Tijjani explained that diabetes can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender, emphasizing the need for awareness, support and comprehensive care throughout every stage of life.
According to him, the campaign highlights the importance of overall well-being, as diabetes affects not only physical health but also mental and emotional wellness. He stressed the need to promote holistic health and collective responsibility.
He said the sensitization effort aims to reduce the global burden of diabetes and foster a healthier, diabetes-free world.
“As we work together to combat diabetes and promote healthy lifestyles, we must consciously incorporate healthy habits into our daily routines,” he said.
“We should check our blood sugar at the nearest health centre because early detection saves lives. We should cut down on sugar, salt and processed foods, and eat more vegetables, fruits and whole grains. We should also move our bodies every day—walk, dance or stretch for at least 30 minutes.”
Tijjani urged Nigerians to avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol intake to reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.
He advised people to pay attention to warning signs such as frequent urination, excessive thirst, tiredness, unexplained weight loss or slow-healing wounds.
He further called for love and support for those living with diabetes, adding: “Together, we can prevent diabetes and protect our future.”
