The Niger State Government has announced plans to sponsor 2,000 students to study medical-related courses across various institutions in Nigeria.
The Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago disclosed this while receiving a delegation from Mercy Medical University, Iwo, Osun State, at the Government House in Minna.
Governor Bago, in his remarks, said the initiative is part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to revamp the health sector, particularly at the primary healthcare level.
He noted that the 2,000 beneficiaries will be selected from all 25 local government areas of the state.
Out of this number, 250 students will be sent to Mercy Medical University under a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will be gazetted by the State House of Assembly to ensure its continuity beyond the current administration.
Governor Bago also revealed that, prior to this, 1,000 Nigerlites, including 100 of Fulani origin, had been screened for similar studies overseas, with the goal of returning to serve their communities.
Responding to the institution’s decision to name its newly constructed Senate building after him, Governor Bago expressed gratitude, describing the gesture as memorable and humbling.
On his part, the acting Vice Chancellor of Mercy Medical University, Prof. Muhammad Sule, praised Governor Bago for his efforts in health, agriculture, and infrastructure, describing him as the best-performing governor.
He said the institution looks forward to a lasting collaboration with the Niger State Government on healthcare personnel training.
Also speaking, former Deputy Governor of Niger State and leader of the visiting delegation, Ahmed Ibeto, hailed Governor Bago as a visionary leader whose achievements are placing the state on the global map.
