A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Richard/Emem Inyang Foundation, on Wednesday conducted a free medical outreach for no fewer than 1,000 vulnerable persons in Akwa Ibom State.
The outreach was held at Palmer Memorial Hospital, Ikot Usen, in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area (LGA) of the state and extended to residents of Ikot Ikpang Itam community.
The exercise formed part of the foundation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Speaking with journalists during the outreach, the President of the Foundation, Mr Richard Inyang, said the programme was organized in thanksgiving to God for preserving his life and as a way of giving back to society.
“What we are doing is a way of appreciating God for saving my life. The accident I had was widely reported in the media.
“I suffered third-degree burns and underwent multiple surgeries. Many believed I would not survive, but God saved my life for a purpose,” he said.
Inyang noted that as a missionary and minister of God, practical support for the needy and vulnerable was one of the most effective ways to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He explained that the programme featured free medical services, distribution of food items, toiletries and clothing, as well as gospel preaching and soul-winning.
“What you have seen here today is purely self-funded. We are not receiving funding from the government or any other organization,” he said.
He commended the medical team, led by Dr Inyang George, for their commitment and for providing the services at little or no cost.
The medical outreach included free eye consultations, health education sessions, eye screening and the distribution of reading glasses, among other services.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Chief Itaobong Sampson expressed gratitude to the foundation for the gesture and prayed for God’s continued blessings on the team.
