The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has urged Nigerians to celebrate Valentine’s Day responsibly by taking deliberate steps to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Dr Temitope Ilori, Director-General of NACA, made the call in a Valentine’s Day message issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
She stressed the need for individuals to prioritize their own health and that of their partners.
Ilori said that while the season is known for expressions of affection and connection, it is equally important to avoid behaviors that increase vulnerability to HIV.
“Let love be guided by responsibility. Knowing your status and protecting yourself and others is a powerful way to show you care,” she said.
She encouraged Nigerians to know their HIV status by getting tested and encouraging their partners to do the same, while practicing safe sex through consistent and correct use of condoms.
The NACA boss also advised citizens to avoid risky behaviors such as having multiple sexual partners, engaging in transactional sex, and excessive alcohol or substance use that could impair judgement.
She further urged the public to access HIV prevention, treatment, and counseling services at government health facilities nationwide.
Ilori reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding access to quality HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services across the country, in line with the national goal of ending new HIV infections.
She advised Nigerians to visit the agency’s website or call the HIV toll-free line 6222 for more information.
