Dr. Felix Tangwami, Commissioner for Health, has reported that a cholera outbreak in Mubi Local Government Area (LGA) has claimed 10 lives, urging residents to uphold strict personal hygiene.
Speaking to reporters in Yola on Wednesday, Tangwami revealed that the deceased died at home rather than in health facilities. He added that the state government, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), had taken immediate steps to contain the outbreak.
“From the beginning, we have been on top of the situation. Our presence has been consistent, and this cannot be denied,” he said.
Tangwami noted that patients who visited healthcare facilities received prompt treatment, with 25 admitted as of Tuesday, November 4, while many others were discharged after receiving hygiene education.
He explained that the state epidemiologist, the Director of Disease Control at the Primary Health Care Development Agency, and volunteers were deployed to Mubi to provide medical services and raise awareness. Teams also traced affected individuals in communities to ensure they received care.
The commissioner further called on traditional leaders to support government efforts by encouraging residents to seek treatment promptly at health facilities.
