By Abubakar Abdullahi I Kuta, Shiroro LGA – September 1, 2025: The Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) Health Department has announced the commencement of the Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccination Campaign, aimed at protecting children between the ages of 9 months and 14 years against the deadly childhood diseases.
The campaign is scheduled to kick off in early October 2025 and will run for 10 days, followed by 2 mop-up days, making a total of 12 days dedicated to ensuring maximum coverage across Shiroro LGA.
According to the Director of Primary Health Care (PHC), Musa Kabir, the campaign will be conducted through fixed and temporary post strategies, with vaccination services extended to schools, markets, places of worship, and other strategic locations.
“We are determined to ensure that no eligible child is missed. This vaccine is safe, effective, and free. Parents and guardians must take this opportunity to protect their children for life,” he said.
At a technical session held ahead of the campaign, departmental directors, local government officials, stakeholders, youth groups, traditional rulers, security agencies, and representatives of schools and health institutions agreed to strengthen community mobilization for the exercise.
Health Education and Social Mobilization Officer, Aminu Saleh, described measles-rubella as a deadly disease with symptoms including high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes, stressing that untreated cases can lead to serious complications.
On the environmental health perspective, Al-Mustafa Mohammed, Assistant Director of Environmental Services, outlined key health challenges in the community and urged collective efforts to tackle them.
Meanwhile, Yakubu Samari, RBM Focal Person, announced plans for the distribution of mosquito nets through PHC focal persons across the wards, with the exception of Bangajiya and Ubandoma.
Representing the World Health Organization (WHO), Mr. Ayuba Danladi emphasized the importance of achieving over 100% coverage, noting that the success of the campaign depends largely on the cooperation of stakeholders and community members.
In his closing remarks, the Director of PHC, Kabir, commended participants for their commitment and urged them to take the campaign’s key messages back to their communities. He reaffirmed the LGA’s commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of children in Shiroro.
