The Lagos State Government has formed a medical panel to investigate the clinical circumstances surrounding the death of the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, announced the development in a statement released in Lagos.
Ayilara passed away on August 29 at LASUTH following prostate cancer surgery.
Prof. Abayomi stated that the panel, led by LASUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabanwo, has been directed to submit a comprehensive report within seven days.
“In light of the circumstances surrounding his passing, occurring just hours after an apparently uneventful surgery, the Ministry of Health, following a directive from the Governor, has set up a medical panel to review the clinical circumstances leading to the death,” Abayomi said.
He added, “We share the grief and understand the anxiety that this news may have caused. We assure the public that the Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation.”
The commissioner expressed that Ayilara’s sudden death has brought profound sadness and shock to many.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on behalf of the government and the people of Lagos State, extends heartfelt condolences to Ayilara’s family, loved ones, the Police, and the government and people of Akwa Ibom State during this difficult time,” he said.
Abayomi praised Ayilara as a distinguished officer whose commitment to duty, integrity, and leadership earned him the admiration of his colleagues and the communities he served.
“His death is a significant loss not only to his family and the Police but also to the entire nation,” he added.
