The Lagos State Government has given N50,000 each to 700 widows to mark the 2025 International Widows Day.
At an event held at the Isheri Skills Acquisition Centre on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Dada, said the government is committed to helping widows, who she called the “pillars of many homes.”
She explained that this event is not just a celebration, but a serious reminder that being a widow should not mean living in hardship. Instead, it should be the start of a new life filled with courage, support, and purpose.
She said the N50,000 cash gift is only part of the help being given. Widows also received training in skills through the Livelihood Economic Empowerment Programme. This was a four-week course held in different parts of Lagos, teaching trades like sewing, soap making, cooking, hairdressing, and tie & dye.
“These programs are designed to be short and practical,” she said, “because we know widows often have to take care of the home and also earn money.”
She added that after the training, the widows received starter kits and were connected to small business support programs that offer grants and tools to help them begin or grow their businesses.
“These are not just programs,” she said. “They are ways to help widows feel proud, earn a living, and contribute to their communities.”
She also talked about the emotional and legal problems many widows face. She said the ministry continues to offer counselling and legal help through its Family Social Services and Domestic Violence Unit.
She told the widows, “We see you. We value you. We support you. On behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, I praise your strength and promise that Lagos State will always stand by you.”
