Kaduna State Government has taken a significant step in the fight against HIV with the official inauguration of the National Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Paediatric Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) Acceleration Plan Committee.

The initiative, led by the Director-General of the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Temitope Ilori, aims to expand life-saving services for mothers and children, reinforcing the state’s commitment to achieving an HIV-free generation.

The newly inaugurated committee will focus on strengthening partnerships, integrating PMTCT into routine antenatal care, and reaching underserved communities where access to its prevention and treatment remains limited.

This approach aligns with the broader national strategy to eliminate mother-to-child transmission and improve paediatric HIV care.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Ilori emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort between government agencies, healthcare providers, and development partners.

She noted that scaling up PMTCT services would not only reduce new HIV infections in children but also ensure that mothers receive the necessary care and support.

The Kaduna State Commissioner for Health, Umma Ahmed, reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems, particularly in maternal and child health.

She commended stakeholders for their dedication and urged them to intensify efforts in raising awareness, increasing HIV testing, and improving treatment accessibility.

“This initiative is a game-changer in our fight against HIV. By integrating PMTCT services into routine antenatal care and focusing on community engagement, we are ensuring that no child is born with HIV and that infected mothers receive adequate treatment,” she said.

Stakeholders, including representatives from civil society organizations, healthcare professionals, and community leaders, praised the move, describing it as a timely intervention to reduce paediatric HIV cases in the state.

The PMTCT & Paediatric ART Acceleration Plan Committee is expected to develop and implement strategies that will enhance service delivery, improve data management, and ensure the sustainability of HIV prevention programs.

With this bold step, Kaduna State joins the national and global movement towards eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and securing a healthier future for children and families.
