The Jigawa Government says it is targeting more than 1.5 million children for vaccination against childhood killer diseases in the November immunization exercise.
The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Shehu Sambo, disclosed this on Tuesday during a media dialogue in Dutse. The event was organized by the state government with support from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Represented by the Assistant Health Educator, Nura Ado, Sambo said a total of 1,516,244 children would be vaccinated between Nov. 27 and Dec. 3.
He said the immunization campaign would run alongside the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Week, during which essential health services would be provided to pregnant women.
Sambo said 2,015 ad hoc teams had been deployed across the 27 local government areas of the state to conduct the exercise, and he urged the media to ensure effective coverage to help dispel misconceptions among caregivers.
The Chief of the UNICEF Kano Field Office, Rahama Farah, commended Jigawa for achieving a 58 per cent reduction in polio cases in 2024.
Farah noted, however, that polio remained a concern, with 72 cases reported across 14 states in 2025. He called for strengthened vaccination coverage and urged local government authorities to closely monitor the exercise to ensure its success.
He also stressed the need for collective stakeholder responsibility to end polio transmission in Jigawa and across the country.
Representative of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mrs. Firdaus Aminu, praised Jigawa for its effective mobilization efforts and pledged the agency’s support to ensure smooth implementation of the exercise.
