The Initiative for Social Impact and Sustainable Development (ISISD) has called for greater attention to men’s mental health, emphasizing its role in creating a safe and inclusive society.
Funmi Falobi, ISISD’s Co-ordinator, made the call in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos to mark International Men’s Day.
Observed annually on November 19, International Men’s Day promotes positive male role models, highlights men’s mental and physical health, addresses discrimination, and fosters a more inclusive society for men and boys. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Men and Boys.”
Falobi stressed the importance of global awareness on men’s mental health and encouraged men to seek help when in distress.
“There is a need for a cultural shift that allows men to speak out during difficult times. Many men, unable to express their struggles, resort to suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, and low self-esteem,” she said.
She urged the Nigerian government and National Assembly to enact laws addressing substance abuse and to raise awareness of mental health issues among men and boys.
“When men and boys are mentally stable, and when positive male role models guide younger generations, society becomes safer and stronger for everyone,” Falobi added.
She highlighted the challenges men face and the need for support to help them reach their potential and contribute meaningfully to societal progress.
“The contributions of men to socio-economic and political development cannot be overlooked. Today, we celebrate men’s resilience, achievements, and their roles in community, family, and nation-building,” she said.
