ASHENEWS reports that a collaboration between a non-governmental organisation, GreenLight Initiative and an Advocate for safer roads and gender equality, Star Okereh is set to address the pressing challenges faced by women in road safety.
According to a statement issued by the Communications Officer at GreenLight Initiative, Patience Agabi, the project funded by the Global Youth Coalition for Road Safety, is titled “Empowering Women for Safe and Inclusive Mobility” in Abuja, Nigeria.
“Reports have highlighted alarming rates of harassment, inequality in transport system usage, and overall poor safety and security on the road for women in the region.
“The project seeks to educate and empower young women aged 18-35 on road safety while advocating for gender-inclusive transport policies and anti-harassment measures,” the statement said.
The statement also quoted the Project Leader, Star Okereh saying “We believe that by empowering women with the necessary knowledge and skills, and advocating for policy changes, we can create a safer and more inclusive road environment for all.”
The six-month project would adopt a multi-dimensional approach encompassing awareness campaigns, advocacy for policy changes, and capacity building for young women as agents of change.
“Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), the project aims to contribute to creating resilient communities and fostering sustainable development,” it added.
