Health expert and Head of Adonia Specialist Dental Clinic, Dr Mustapha Danjuma, has called for greater investment in dental infrastructure and public awareness to enhance oral healthcare across Nigeria.
In an interview on Thursday in Karu Local Government Area, Danjuma emphasised the growing importance of oral health and the potential for improved care nationwide.
He highlighted the opportunity for progress by expanding access to dental clinics in government facilities and increasing awareness of proper oral hygiene practices.
“Improving dental infrastructure and ensuring the presence of dental professionals in government hospitals can greatly enhance the oral health of Nigerians,” he said.
Danjuma emphasised that encouraging more young people to pursue careers in dental surgery, through the many institutions training dentists across Nigeria, was vital to closing existing gaps in dental care.
He stressed that oral health was a vital part of overall well-being, noting that several systemic conditions, such as bacterial endocarditis and respiratory infections, could originate in the mouth.
“Taking care of the mouth helps prevent infections that can spread to other parts of the body,” he said.
To promote good oral hygiene, Danjuma encouraged individuals to brush their teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste endorsed by the Nigerian Dental Association and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
“Brushing at night and in the morning after breakfast helps reduce microbial buildup from leftover food particles,” he advised.
He also recommended routine dental checkups at least once every six months for early detection and management of dental issues.
Danjuma expressed optimism about the efforts of the Dental Association and other stakeholders in raising awareness and improving access to oral healthcare.
He called on government leaders to continue supporting initiatives that promote dental health across the country.
