The Edo State branch of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has announced the withdrawal of medical services statewide, effective 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, following the abduction of two doctors on January 1 and 2.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, the association said the incident raises serious concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals in Edo State, threatening lives and undermining healthcare delivery.
The NMA demanded the immediate release of the abducted doctors, the implementation of enhanced security measures for healthcare workers and residents, and regular engagement between the NMA and the Edo State Government on security issues.
“A safe working environment is crucial for healthcare providers. We will continue to withhold services until our demands are met and our colleagues are safe,” the statement read.
The association warned that security operatives would be held accountable for the consequences of any harm resulting from the ongoing situation, urging a swift resolution and the safe return of the abducted doctors.
