Doctor urges journalists to prioritise regular check-ups

A medical expert, Dr Jefferson Nwanoka, has urged journalists to prioritise regular medical check-ups, warning that neglecting one’s health could have serious consequences for their well-being.

Dr Nwanoka gave this advice on Tuesday during a free medical outreach organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, in partnership with NIKZAR Medical Centre.

The event, which took place at the chapel’s secretariat in Mokola, Ibadan, was organised as part of the hospital’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The outreach provided free medical screenings, consultations and medications for about 50 journalists and residents of the host community.

The senior medical personnel disclosed that a high number of beneficiaries were diagnosed and placed on medication, while others were advised to visit hospitals for further evaluation and follow-up treatment.

He noted that most of the cases attended to were hypertension-related, emphasising that routine medical examinations remain essential for the early detection and effective management of health conditions.

“As medical practitioners, we always say health is wealth; there is no way anyone can be productive without good health.

“Just as machines require regular servicing, the human body also needs routine care. No one should wait until they become seriously ill before seeking medical attention,” he said.

He added that the initiative also benefited residents of the surrounding community, reaffirming that NIKZAR Medical Centre remains committed to taking healthcare services closer to the people.

Speaking shortly after the programme, some of the beneficiaries, including Mrs Bridget Ayodele, Mrs Sina Abisoye and Mr Kolawole Abdul Lateef, said the outreach afforded them the opportunity to undergo a comprehensive medical examination at no cost.

They commended the organisers, describing the initiative as both timely and beneficial.

The NUJ Chairman in Oyo State, Mr Akeem Abas, commended the initiative, noting that: “Journalists hardly find the time to go for routine medical check-ups because of the pressure and stress associated with our work.

“This programme serves as a reminder that we must prioritise our health and know our medical status.”

Mr Yinka Adeniran, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of Oyo NUJ, assured members that efforts are ongoing to partner with other healthcare providers to ensure that members continue to enjoy good health.
