A former Chairman of the National Committee of Provosts of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Adekunle Okesina, has urged medical practitioners to adopt emerging technologies, particularly local ones, to overcome patient management barriers.
Okesina made this call in Ilorin during his retirement and 70th birthday anniversary celebrations in Ilorin.
He highlighted the importance of cross-fertilising ideas among practitioners as an effective patient management strategy.
As a Chemical Pathologist, Okesina stressed the need for knowledge sharing and expertise exchange in the medical field to drive innovation, improve devices, and achieve research breakthroughs.
Okesina also noted that the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among practitioners was crucial in addressing Nigeria’s patient management challenges.
In his lecture, the Immediate Past Provost of Benue State University’s College of Health Sciences, Prof. Simeon Adebisi, defined Chemical Pathology as a branch of pathology focused on disease’s biochemical basis.
Adebisi advised Nigerian medical doctors to leverage emerging technologies in patient management, citing the global shift towards multidisciplinary patient care.
“The days of solo doctor-led patient management are over.
“Now, we bring together different specialties to form a team, share knowledge, and provide better interventions,” Adebisi said
In his keynote speech, the Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. John Obafunwa, lauded Okesina as a simple, brilliant, and humble individual.
“I wish him the best in his future endeavours,” Obafunwa said.
