ASHENEWS reports that the federal government has been called to establish a Ministry for Widow Affairs or an Agency for Widows to ensure that widows’ welfare is prioritized and their rights are protected.
Dr. Omolola Omoteso, founder of the Walk With Widows Initiative, who stated this during the 5th Annual Justice for Widows Press Conference said that the Ministry or Agency will be responsible for the criminalization of widow abuse which would serve as a powerful deterrent, ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.
The conference, which drew stakeholders from various sectors, including human rights activists, government representatives, and members of the media, centred on the widespread abuse and neglect of widows. In her address, Omoteso emphasized the need for legal reforms to criminalize widow abuse, noting that current policies and societal attitudes often leave widows vulnerable and without recourse.
During the conference, widows shared personal stories of abuse and survival. Ms. Efemena Ogundana and Mrs. Adetutu Banjo, among others, recounted their experiences of being denied property rights, abandoned by family and friends, and facing legal systems that do not favour them.
Omoteso called for greater collaboration among organizations and the need for legal reforms to strengthen the protection of widows adding that there is an urgent need for a shift towards achieving legal, judicial, and executive reforms to end the disinheritance, discrimination, and dehumanization of widows.
The conference also emphasized the importance of educating the public, particularly women who are married, on protecting themselves from potential abuse after the death of a spouse.
A significant focus of the conference was on the lack of legal protection and the pervasive discrimination faced by widows. Dr. Omoteso called for comprehensive legal reforms, including the establishment of a Ministry for Widow Affairs or an Agency for Widows.
