Malami, giving the position when he appeared as a guest on ChannelsTV’s Politics Today on Wednesday explained that the trials associated with Kanu were not concluded, a situation that could not be pave the way pardon.
“Pardon is a function of conviction in the Nigerian context and as far as I know, Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted yet so the idea of pardoning him is premature,” the AGF said.
On the IPOB leader’s pardon as option for peace in the South East, Malami said though he was yet to assess the security implications of such a decision, consideration would be given in the best interest of the public.
Recall that Southeast leaders a few days ago, met with President Muhammadu Buhari to plead for Kanu’s pardoned.
Buhari had however opined that “the implication” is very serious, adding that an unconditional release of Kanu, who is standing trial, would run contrary to the doctrine of separation of powers between the executive and judiciary.
