Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has expressed satisfaction with the continuous growth in trade volume between Nigeria and China, describing it as the highest in Africa.
This was stated in a press release issued on Wednesday by the Vice President’s spokesperson, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha.
Shettima made the remarks while receiving a Chinese delegation led by Mr. Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Shettima noted that the trade relationship between the two nations reached $22.6 billion in 2023, marking a 33% annual growth.
“In 2023, our trade relations with China reached $22.6 billion, one of the highest in Africa, if not the highest. This trade relationship continues to grow at an impressive rate of 33% annually,” Shettima said.
He acknowledged the resilience of the Nigerian economy and its ability to sustain robust business relations with China.
“Despite challenges, the Nigerian economy is gaining momentum, and this has not hindered our business partnership with China. I want to reassure you of our unwavering support. We believe in, respect, and cherish this relationship,” he added.
Shettima emphasized the importance of strengthening the bilateral ties between the two nations, which date back over five decades.
“Nigeria and China have enjoyed warm bilateral relations for 53 years, dating back to 1971. This friendship is evident in numerous high-level engagements, including President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to China in September 2024. These visits have deepened cooperation and fortified our mutual ties,” he said.
Expressing admiration for China’s rich culture and global influence, Shettima called for enhanced South-South cooperation and greater engagement between the two nations.
“This is a critical time for stronger South-South cooperation. Nigeria and China should build even closer ties to foster mutual growth and prosperity.”
Shettima reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for the One China policy and highlighted the need for collaboration to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
“You mentioned security; there can be no peace without development, and no development without peace. We are committed to repositioning our security architecture and are investing in advanced technology. Your support and partnership will be invaluable.”
In his remarks, Mr. Zhang Qingwei praised the strategic partnership between Nigeria and China, describing it as entering a new phase. He highlighted the joint efforts by Presidents Tinubu and Xi Jinping during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September 2024 to elevate bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
“China is ready to work with Nigeria to implement the agreements reached by our leaders and to further elevate our relations. We are committed to supporting Nigeria in its journey towards economic diversification and development,” Zhang stated.
The meeting underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between Nigeria and China in trade, security, and political support to achieve shared goals and advance both nations’ prosperity.
