Unveiling An Amazon: Amina Garba, Newest mni in the Caliphate

Amina Yusuf Garba, mni, is a Member of Niger, MON, and at present, the Registrar of Sokoto State University. She had her First School Leaving Certificate from St. Paul Primary School Sokoto and her West African School Certificate from Federal Government College Sokoto. She went to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto graduating with B. A. English and proceeded to Bayero University Kano where she graduated with Masters Degree in English Language.

Fondly referred to as The Amazon within the academic circle, Mrs Garba has been a beneficiary of recognition by worthy organs. First, she got the Federal Government Scholarship Award. Amina was also recognized by Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto with a Distinguished Merit Award. Additionally, she was honoured with the Honorary Citizen, Kansas City, Missouri, USA. The astute woman that she is attracted the federal government of Nigeria during the administration of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, which recognized her as Member Order of the Niger, MON.

Amina is an accomplished administrator, educationist, policymaker, peace ambassador and role model as well as certified Member of Nigerian Institute of Management, NIM; certified Member of the Association of University Professional Administrators, ANUPA and certified Member of Institute of Industrialists and Corporate Administrators of Nigeria.

Hajiya Amina, the beautiful, jovial and humble young woman at that time, started her work career during her National Youth Corps service at Sokoto state Ministry of Information and Culture. After her compulsory service, she went to develop herself as University Administrator at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto where she rose through the ranks to become Deputy Registrar at the University.

Amina as Youth Corps memberAs if some other states wanted to have a taste of her God-given brain, Zamfara swooped Amina and made her the Director-General at the Directorate of Women and Children Affairs and, satisfied with her performance, the state government made her Commissioner in many ministries including: Ministry of Women Affairs, Ministry of Water Resources and Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Thereafter, Amina became Permanent Member, Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board, Gusau.

Mrs Garba became a subject of scramble between Sokoto and Zamfara because, when Sokoto State University was created in 2009, the state government, having sniffed Amina’s giant strides in Zamfara, wooed her to it as Registrar in 2012, a position she still holds till date.

Amina Yusuf Garba, MON, was listed to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos to attend the Senior Executive Course 42, returning in 2020 as the newest member of the Institute in the Caliphate state of Sokoto.

A community mobilizer, Amina Garba has been of great service to the society. She was Resource Person, Centre for Democratic Studies Training of Elected Councillors, Sokoto; Discussant, Etsu-Nupe Committee on University Crisis, Abuja; Facilitator, 1999 Census Exercise, Sokoto; Domestic Observer, 2003 General Elections, Zamfara state; Domestic Observer, 2007 General Elections; member of UNICEF High Level Women Advocates, Sokoto state from till date and patron, Young Leadership Association of Nigeria (YLAL), Sokoto State Chapter.

Amina Yusuf Garba has visited many countries including Saudi Arabia, USA, United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, UAE, Pakistan, India, Canada, China, Egypt and Finland. Her hobbies include travelling and socializing and community work.
