ASHENEWS reports that the Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has announced free transportation for students of public primary schools in the state.
Bago stated this when he received the officials of the National Examination Council (NECO).
The entourage, led by its Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi met with the governor at the Government House on Friday in Minna.
Bago said that the government’s decision was aimed at cushioning the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy and also encouraging the pupils to attend classes.
Bago equally charged the Council to do more in the area of its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSRs).
“As a government, we cry foul. We have not felt NECO in terms of Corporate Social Responsibilities, we have not seen a block of classrooms that have been fixed by NECO. You cannot be a tenant in our state and not add value to our people and communities.
“NECO needs to sponsor educational activities like essay writing and also deploy some of their human resources to classrooms to teach and do mentorship,” he advised.
Meanwhile, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the council, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi drew the attention of the state government to the fluctuating registration figures for the Senior Secondary School Examinations in the state.
Wushishi said that the council has observed fluctuating figures from 2018 to 2022.
Wushishi thereby suggested that the state government makes NECO examinations compulsory for all the Public Schools in Niger State.
He further assured the government of the council’s readiness to partner with it in this regard.
