ASHENEWS reports that the Niger state chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), says that the association and its members will not hesitate to seek legal redress from any individual or organization which discriminates against its members.
The Chairman of the Association, Isah Umar Aliyu stated this while speaking in an interview in Minna on Sunday.
Umar, who explained that a lack of awareness of the anti-discrimination law coupled with ignorance was promoting stigma in society said that persons with disabilities have since proven their worth to society.
“Gone are those days when society thinks people with disabilities have nothing to offer to society.
“We live in a world of globalization where education has been given significant attention. With education, not only human beings but even animals are trained to mark impact to humanity how much more of human beings,” he said.
Aliyu urged the Niger state government to help promote inclusion by supporting the education of persons with disabilities.
“The present administration has promised, even appointed one as coordinator PWD to him. He has promised to domesticate the law that has given us a commission since 2014,” he said.
He further urged parents to desist from segregating their children who have disabilities.
“I also want to urge the teachers here to encourage these students to go into professional fields of studies so that by the time they graduate, they have job opportunities at hand,” he added.
