Multichoice Group says it has received more than 140 nominations for the 2021 South African Film & Television awards (SAFTAs) which aim to promote creativity in Africa.
“With over 140 nominations, Multichoice’s investments in local television and film production has paid off once more as we lead the way ahead of the most prestigious awards in South Africa”, the group said on their official Twitter handle, @MultiC_Studio, on Monday.
“We are excited to once again see most of our shows scoop the bulk of this year’s SAFTAs nominations.
“This is a win for local Television and film and demonstrates Multichoice group’s commitment to investing in local content to allow for local stories told by Africans.
“The nominations are also a testament to the incredible resilience of all the talent and crew in various productions as the industry navigated the complexities brought by global COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is characterised by production stoppages and a period of uncertainty for many creative teams,” Yolisa Phahle, the Chief Executive Officer, General Entertainment of Multichoice”, tweeted.
Phahle stated that the most notable of the nominations were ‘The River and Legacy’ with 12 nominations each in the telenovelas category.
In the drama categories, the M-Net original, ‘Still Breathing’ was nominated, whilst the Hit soap, Binnelander, was nominated for awards including Best Achievement in Directing TV Soap, just as Suidooster was also up for two awards in the TV Soap categories.
She added that the 15th annual SAFTAs would take place on May 22.
