The Sokoto state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has sympathized with the state government over the fire incident that gutted the central market on Tuesday.
The union, in a statement jointly signed by its chairman and secretary, Isa Shuni and Abubakar Imam and made available to ASHENEWS on Thursday, described the disaster as a great economic loss to both government and the victims.
Commending government for its timely intervention, the union also applauded governor Aminu Tambuwal for “promptly” setting up a committee, to ascertain the cause of the inferno and assess the damage caused by the fire.
“We urge the committee to complete its works within the given timeframe, as this would enable the state government to assist the victims in earnest.
“We also call on the government to ensure the provision of motorable roads and fire equipment within all markets across the state, to avoid future reoccurrence.
“We call on traders to support and cooperate with the committee in order to do a thorough job.
“The union commend the men of the federal and state fire services which worked tireless to quench the fire,” the statement reads.
The council thanked the governors of Kebbi and Rivers states for their prompt support to the state government and victims.
