Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu, has donated 10 Hilux vans to support the construction of the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway.
ASHENEWS reports that the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, received the Hilux vans on behalf of the Federal Government on Wednesday in Sokoto.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Aliyu said the donation fulfilled the state government’s pledge to support the project in recognition of the importance of road infrastructure linking states across the country.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for initiating the project, noting that it would stimulate socio-economic development and enhance connectivity nationwide.
Earlier, Goronyo described the 1,068km highway as a legacy project designed to accelerate economic growth and development across Nigeria.
The minister said the vehicles would enhance security surveillance along the project corridor and assured that other operational requirements would also receive the necessary support.
He commended the Sokoto State Government for its foresight and commitment to the project, assuring that the vehicles would be put to good use.
“The vehicles will be properly maintained,” he said.
Also speaking, the Federal Controller of Works in Sokoto State, Kassimu Maigwandu, disclosed that the Sokoto section of the highway spans 120 kilometres and will be constructed using concrete pavement.
According to him, the project includes a six-lane carriageway, bridges, solar-powered street lighting, a railway corridor, CCTV surveillance systems, health posts, and security stations to ensure rapid emergency response.
He added that construction is currently ongoing at six locations simultaneously, with adequate security measures already in place.
Maigwandu said the project “goes beyond infrastructure,” stressing that it would revitalise agriculture, tourism, education, and healthcare while driving economic growth.
The 1,068km Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway was inaugurated on October 24, 2024, at Illela Local Government Area under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The latest donation follows the Sokoto State Government’s earlier support for national security efforts. Recently, the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa, received security equipment donated by the state government, including 62 armoured vehicles and 300 motorcycles valued at N27 billion.
The equipment was donated to strengthen the capacity of security agencies in combating banditry and other security challenges across the state.
