The Federal High Court, has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Muhammad Adamu, to produce the Bayelsa governorship candidate of Liberation Movement, Mr Vijah Opuama, detained by the police since Aug. 15 before it on Wednesday.
Justice Taiwo Taiwo, who gave the order in an ex-parte application moved by Opuama’s lawyer, Mr Michael Odey, on Monday, said the detained politician must be produced on Wednesday.
The judge also directed the IGP to show cause why Opuama should not be released unconditionally. “The respondents shall show cause why the applicant should not be released unconditionally”.
He wondered why the police could detain the suspect beyond the constitutionally-permitted 24 hours period without granting him an administrative bail or charging him with any offence before any court of competent jurisdiction.
“The applicant shall be produced in court on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2020,” the judge ordered.
