The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 49-year-old man for allegedly attempting to sell his five-year-old biological daughter.
The suspect, identified as Yusuf Umar from Dagu village in Warji LGA of Bauchi State was arrested in a hotel in Bauchi on the 26th of May, 2024 when he attempted to sell the little girl at the sum of N1.5 million naira.
Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters, the Bauchi state Commissioner of Police CP Auwal Mohammed said the suspect who claimed to be a staff with Warji Local government council took the daughter from his estranged wife under the pretence that he would take her to his sister in Bauchi town.
“Unknown to the mother he had already arranged to hand over the girl to unknown person, not knowing that he is a Police detective, Where the defendant was arrested in a Hotel in Bauchi after he bargained for one million five hundred thousand naira (N1.500,000) to give up his biological daughter.
“Additionally, the defendant to sure his interest sent the sum of forty thousand naira for transportation fees to the person who linked him up with the buyer.”
The Police Commissioner said that he has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Intelligence Department (CID) to discreetly investigate the case to unravel more motives behind the defendant’s actions after which he will be charged in court upon completion of the investigation for the established offence.
Speaking to journalists shortly after he was paraded, the suspect said that he doesn’t know what pushed him to commit the offence adding that he regrets his actions.
