The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially accepted an invitation to join the BRICS as a partner country, a move expected to bolster the nation’s international partnerships and economic prospects. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the move on Saturday in a statement issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Acting Spokesperson for the Ministry, in Abuja.
The statement highlighted Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and aligning its national aspirations with the principles of inclusive growth, regional integration, and strategic autonomy.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria has accepted the invitation to join BRICS as a partner country,” the statement read, emphasizing the government’s vision of leveraging this partnership to advance Nigeria’s socio-economic goals.
As a coalition of major emerging economies—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—BRICS offers a unique platform for Nigeria to deepen trade, investment, and socio-economic cooperation with its member nations.

“Nigeria aims to use this partnership to advance shared goals in areas such as trade and investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change,” the Ministry noted.
The partnership aligns with Nigeria’s broader objectives of promoting inclusive growth and regional integration, while also enabling the nation to contribute to shaping a fair and equitable global economic order.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored that the collaboration would enhance Nigeria’s active participation on the global stage and strengthen its role in driving innovation, fostering economic development, and promoting people-to-people exchanges with BRICS member states.
“This step underscores Nigeria’s determination to engage constructively with BRICS members, leveraging economic opportunities and advancing strategic partnerships in alignment with national interests and priorities,” the statement added.
Nigeria’s acceptance into BRICS as a partner country is viewed as a significant milestone in its foreign policy, offering the nation a seat at the table of global economic discussions among influential emerging economies.
The partnership is expected to provide Nigeria with access to new trade opportunities, investments in critical sectors, and collaboration on issues of mutual interest, including sustainable development and energy transition.
With this development, Nigeria seeks to harness the strengths of the BRICS framework to propel its national growth and contribute to the collective advancement of member countries.
