Some farmers in Makurdi Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state have expressed concern over the lack of adequate rainfall in the area this planting season.
A cross-section of the farmers made their feelings known in an interview in Makurdi on Tuesday.
They said that the unhealthy situation was taking a negative toll on their crops.
They lamented that their crops, such as maize and groundnuts, had started withering.
Two maize farmers in Makurdi, John Orshi and Toryila Dwuem, said that they had not experienced the situation since they ventured into commercial farming.
They expressed the fear that they might not be able to recover what they had invested in their farms, should the situation persist.
Also, a rice farmer in Makurdi, Mrs Judith Vingir, described the situation as worrisome, saying that farmers were on the verge of losing their investment and means of livelihood.
A yam farmer, Mr Aondozungwe Vishir, said that the drought was a curse.
According to him, their crops were dying and their main source of livelihood was at stake.
“It has been months since we had rain last.
“We only hear that it rained in one part of the state or the other but not in Makurdi,” Vishir said.
They prayed to God to cause rain to fall in the area for their farms to produce good yields.
