Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize in recognition of his enduring commitment to peacebuilding and democratic governance across Africa.
The award ceremony, held in Seoul, South Korea, saw Dr. Jonathan receiving the Founder’s Sunhak Peace Prize, making him the first African leader to be honoured in this special category. He joins the ranks of previous laureates such as former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee lauded Dr. Jonathan’s tireless efforts in conflict resolution, mediation, and the promotion of democracy on the continent. His work through the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF), the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), and the International Summit Council for Peace (ISCP) was noted as instrumental in advancing peace, especially in turbulent political climates.
In addition to Jonathan, the 2025 prize also recognized other global peacebuilders: Patrick Awuah Jr., founder of Ashesi University in Ghana; Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen; and Wanjira Mathai, Africa Director at the World Resources Institute.
Reacting to the honour, Jonathan expressed gratitude for the global recognition of his peace Advocacy.
“Peace is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of justice and equity. I dedicate this prize to the resilient people of Africa who continue to strive for democracy and unity.”
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar both extended their congratulations. President Tinubu praised Jonathan’s legacy, highlighting his historic peaceful concession in the 2015 general election as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Established in 2015 by the Sunhak Peace Prize Foundation, the biennial award celebrates individuals and organizations making significant contributions to sustainable development, conflict resolution, and human welfare.
Dr. Jonathan’s recognition marks a proud moment for Nigeria and the African continent, reinforcing Africa’s role in shaping global peace narratives.
