The Hydro Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) says it has approved N1.2 billion for a water project involving the overhauling and reticulation of New Bussa waterworks in the Borgu local government area of Niger.
The HYPPADEC Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa announced this known during the hand-over ceremony of the contract at the site of the waterworks in New Bussa on Thursday.
He observed that with the completion of the rehabilitation of the waterworks, the dearth of water that the area had been experiencing for a long time would end.
Sadiq-Yelwa said that the contract would be completed within six months, warning the contractors to ensure contract specifications.
Represented by the Director Community and Rural Development Directorate, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed-Umar, he charged the community to support and take ownership of the contract.
HYPPADEC Director Operations Ilyasu Abdullahi-Wara also explained that the “contract is divided into seven lots to various contractors”.
He added that the project consisted of technical and booster stations of one pump house and tank rehabilitation.
He said other components of the contract include the provision of utility vehicles, laboratory equipment, a reticulation system and seven-kilometer expansion of distribution, rehabilitation of the entire building, and three-kilometre expansion of the old township expansion, among others.
The Managing Director, Niger State Water and Sewage Corporation, Mr. Mohammed Hassan-Chado, represented by his staff, Mr. Gimba Isah said that the rehabilitation of the waterworks would ensure the provision of potable water.
He called for the support and understanding of the citizens to ensure the maintenance of the project for effective and efficient service delivery.
Borgu local government chairman, Suleiman Yerima appreciated the kind gesture of HYPPADEC, noting that the community had suffered for years.
He urged the consumers and citizens to cooperate by paying their water rates to ensure sustainability.
The Emir of Borgu, Mohammed Sani-Dantoro, represented by the Wazirin Borgu, Bala Sa’adu, thanked the commission for the initiative.
He, therefore, appealed to the contractors handling the job to ensure standards.
