Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has urged journalists to remain truthful, objective, and professional in their reportage to promote democracy and public trust.
Otu gave the charge on Monday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Calabar while inspecting a 15 KVA solar-powered inverter he donated to the union.
Represented by his Commissioner for Information, Dr Erasmus Ekpang, the governor said he values honesty and described himself as a straightforward leader committed to transparency and open engagement with the media.
He noted that his support for information management underscores his recognition of the media’s critical role in shaping public perception and good governance.
Otu commended journalists for their resilience, saying their reports have positively projected the state despite criticisms and differing public opinions.
“Criticism is healthy as it keeps government activities in the public domain and encourages accountability and balanced narratives.
“Media reports have helped audiences better understand developments in the state by highlighting progress while acknowledging challenges,” he noted.
He appreciated journalists for their support and encouragement since he assumed office, noting improved collaboration over time.
The governor assured the union of continued engagement and urged them to channel concerns appropriately for prompt attention and resolution.
Dr Ekpang pledged welfare support for journalists, especially during festive periods, while acknowledging their vital role in the information ecosystem.
“This administration is committed to sustaining a media-friendly environment and strengthening partnerships with journalists in the state,” he added.
