Beneficiaries of a free eye care outreach organised by March 8th Initiative, an NGO, also known as Friends of Prof. have commended the organisers for restoring their eyesight.
Dr Ebi Awosika, Coordinator of the outreach which held in Jos on Thursday and Friday said that the exercise was part of activities put together by the group to mark the March 8 birthday of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
According to him, the group had been holding similar programmes across the six geopolitical zones of the country in support and recognition of the vice president’s birthday.
He said the outreaches were held in collaboration with the National Eye Centre, Kaduna and the ministries of heath in the states.
Miss Favour Sunday, an eight year old girl who successfully underwent cataract surgery, praised the group for organising the programme.
The eight-year-old whose parents could not afford to pay for the surgery elsewhere, urged the NGO to keep up “the good work of helping the needy.”
Another beneficiary, Mr Olu Bukola, said, “I couldn’t read and I was sensitive to light; but today, I have been operated on the eye for free.
“I could not afford to pay for an operation on my own but thank God for the oganisers of this outreach programme.”
Miss Mafeng Gyang who also benefited from March 8 Initiative said that she had been having problems with her two eyes and could barely see or read well.
“It started since 1999 when I was in secondary school. My friend told me about this outreach programme.
“I came and surgery was carried out on my two eyes free of charge,” he said.
