Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has criticized the United States government for commenting on how Nigerian governors spend public money.
In a recent post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the U.S. Mission in Nigeria pointed to a report claiming that while Nigerians are told to bear economic hardship like it’s a necessary pain, some governors are spending billions to build new government houses.
The U.S. Mission, quoting a group called BudgIT, said that instead of spending money on schools, hospitals, or farming, Nigerian leaders are focusing on expensive buildings that they hardly use.
They added that this kind of careless spending increases inequality and makes people lose trust in their government. This message was part of their #TransparencyTuesday campaign.
In response, Fani-Kayode told the U.S. government to fix its own problems before telling other countries how to govern.
Fani-Kayode, who often speaks out against Israel, said the U.S. is giving more weapons to Israel even while children in Gaza are being killed and starved. He called it genocide.
He also accused the U.S. government of using the war between Ukraine and Russia to hide money and enrich corrupt leaders. He claimed that before Donald Trump became president, USAID was used to move large sums of money across countries for dishonest purposes.
Fani-Kayode concluded by saying the U.S. should clean up its own problems before trying to teach other countries about good governance.
