The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, to allow for urgent runway rehabilitation work.
A statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, said the decision followed the discovery of a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.
“To ensure the safety of passengers and aircraft operations, emergency repair works will be carried out from April 22 to May 6, 2025.
“In line with Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has closed the runway for the duration of the rehabilitation. During this period, no takeoffs or landings will be permitted at the airport.
“This closure reflects FAAN’s unwavering commitment to ensuring passenger safety and the continued modernisation of airport infrastructure across the country. All affected flights will be diverted to nearby airports, and stakeholders are advised to make alternative arrangements accordingly.
“FAAN deeply regrets the inconvenience caused by this unexpected development and appeals to all passengers, airlines, and airport users for their understanding and cooperation during this time.
“We sincerely apologise for the short notice and appreciate your continued support,” the statement reads.
