Stakeholders on Saturday advocated for peaceful coexistence and religious freedom to create a harmonious and tolerant society free from violent conflicts.
They made the call at the First Africa Religious Film Festival, organised by Empower Women Media, in Abuja.
The event is themed, “Promoting Religious Freedom through Creative Media.”
The Country Coordinator, of Live What You Believe Project Nigeria, Mr Felix Samari described religious freedom as a fundamental human right, crucial for creating a society, where individuals irrespective of their differences coexist peacefully.
Samari noted the pivotal role the media plays in educating the public on stereotypes and prejudices, which stem from the misconceptions leading to disharmony and violent conflicts.
“This Film festival was carefully put together to serve as a platform for discussing crucial issues around religious freedom, peace, security and stability of our dear country, Nigeria.
“As you watch, we implore you to interact and network as well as share your insightful experiences from across the various parts of Nigeria.
“It is a time of reflection, listening and learning, to building new bridges and alliances, and to commence an advocacy for achieving peaceful co-existence among Nigerians,” he said.
Also, the Head of Admin and Finance Unit, GIZ Agric Cluster, Reinhard Eckert stressed the need to make available the films on the Internet, so that people could easily access them and learn a lot from them.
Also, the keynote speaker, Rev. Fr. Cornelius Omonokhua stressed the need for Nigerians to shun any form of religious intolerance and embrace peace, respect and understanding for every individual irrespective of their religious preference.
Similarly, a social justice and social inclusion advocate and a peace builder, Dr Sumaiya Hamza stressed the role of youths to participate actively in peacebuilding.
She said: “What are you going to do to act and promote peace, and respect for each other’s religion? It is our collective responsibility to promote religious freedom.”
Speaking during a panel discussion, the Chief Operations Officer, of Civitas Auxillium Foundation (CAF), Mrs Elizabeth Duile stressed the need for the public to be intentional in promoting peaceful coexistence through religious tolerance.
The Empower Women Media, launched in 2015 brings together leaders to promote gender equality, peace-building & religious liberty.
