The Nigeria Army has declared 13 officers and 89 soldiers wanted for deserting the war against Boko Haram during the insurgents attack on New Marte and Dikwa on February 14 and 19, 2021.
Although Nigerian troops successfully repelled multiple Boko Haram attacks on Marte as well as foiling the terrorists plan to reclaim the town, the insurgents gained a momentary upper hand after intense hours of fighting, prompting the troops to tactically retreat to Dikwa on February 14.
But the troops successfully reclaimed Marte and neutralised several insurgents following orders and morale boosts from the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru who visited the troops at the headquarters of Super Camp 9 Lafiya Dole in Dikwa.

This development is coming on the heels of House of Representatives revelation that 386 soldiers resigned from the Nigerian Army in the second quarter of 2020, “which is well over the 365 figures previously assumed”.
The House, however, stated that the resignations were not related to the ongoing war against insurgency in the North-East.
It was repoted that on July 12, 2020, that no fewer than 356 soldiers in the North-East and other theatres of operation, applied to the then Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai, for voluntary retirement, citing “loss of interest” as their reason for disengagement.
It was gathered that the majority of the soldiers were from the North-East theatre of operation, a development which military sources attributed to the loss of morale, poor weapons, unimproved allowances and the continuous loss of soldiers to Boko Haram attacks.
