The people democratic Party, PDP, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to beam its search light on the activities of Kebbi state government.
This is contained in a statement by the chairman of the party, Haruna Saidu made available to ASHENEWS on Tuesday.
According to him, events in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which has led to the suspension of a working committee member and resignation of the state spokesperson of the party over alleged funds disbursement, are worrisome and call for the intervention of the EFCC.
“Our attention has been drawn to an issue of equal importance as par, rule of law, transparency, probity and public accountability. In the past recent days, crises have engulfed the Kebbi chapter of the APC, resulting to the suspension of a working committee member and resignation of the state spokesperson of the party.
“These have opened can of worms, in the way public funds are diverted for party use. Allegations and counter allegations by the Kebbi APC officials and the mere mention of the state government as the alleged source of the funds, warrants the coming of the EFCC into this issue of public interest.
“We are calling on the EFCC to beam its search lights on Kebbi state and commence a painstaking investigation into the diversion of government fund to inappropriate use, which is in violation of extant financial regulations and laws. The anti corruption agency should go further to examine records and account books of the ministries and parastatals of Kebbi state with a view to detecting misconduct and diversion of funds meant for the development of our people,” the statement reads.
The party also called on politicians, community leaders, and leaders of thought, civil society organizations and interest groups in the state, “to break the jinx of the culture of SILENCE prevalent in the state.
“We must speak against anything that stands in the way of our people. Let’s get it right that speaking against ineptitude performance in governance, and abuse of office can never be a crime. We should speak in favour of anything that is pro-people, pro-poor, development oriented projects.
The PDP also commiserated with the people of Yauri and Zuru Emirates over recent boats capsize as well as victims of banditry and called on government to take more proactive measures to curb future occurrence.
