The Cross River State legislature, at its plenary Wednesday, passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Rt Hon. Elvert Ayambem.
This is in recognition of Ayambem’s exceptional leadership skills, tenacity, and dedication to ‘people-first legislation.’
In a motion moved by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Sylvester Agabi, on behalf of the legislators, he remarked that within its 43 days in office, the 10th Assembly successfully passed over 10 motions, took about 5 Matters of Public Interest, and carried out oversight functions on several sectors.
Agabi added that some bills have also passed second reading.
He attributed these successes to the able leadership roles of the Speaker whom he described as the “people’s speaker,”
Other achievements of the 10th Assembly in the state and within the short period as enumerated by the deputy speaker includes members embarking on two local legislative training as well as two international training, securing approval and subsequent release of committee vehicles which are awaiting delivery.
He also explained that the house has received several petitions even as ad-hoc committees have competently resolved differences amongst parties involved.
The motion was seconded by the Deputy Leader of the House and Member representing Abi State Constituency, Rt Hon. Davies Etta, who also extolled the qualities of the Speaker.
Responding, the Speaker, expressed appreciation to the legislators for their vote of confidence in him.
He noted that his emergence as Speaker was an act of God and promised to lead the Assembly with love and commitment.
“It is by God’s instrumentality that I am where I am today. I intend to lead the 10th Assembly with love and not a vendetta.
“I will ensure that we live as a family even though we belong to different political parties,” Ayambem said.
The Speaker who sued for cooperation from the Members to enable the 10th Assembly to provide effective legislation to the people of Cross River State, also pledged to redouble his efforts in strengthening state laws for the greater good of the citizenry.
