The Centre for Innovative and Pragmatic Development Initiative (CIPDI) has condemned Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, an APGA member representing the Aba North/South Federal Constituency in Abia State for his alleged physical assault against a Bolt driver in Abuja.
The reported assault on a Bolt driver is both disappointing and alarming. This incident, documented on video, shows an act that goes beyond mere misconduct, symbolizing a serious misuse of authority and disregard for the fundamental rights that every Nigerian is entitled to enjoy.
“As Nigerians, we all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless of who we are or where we come from. The Nigerian Constitution enshrines the right to dignity and protects citizens from degrading treatment or harassment,” CIPDI president, Ifeanyi Nwanoro stated.” When someone in a position of public trust appears to act in violation of these principles, it shakes the foundation of fairness and justice that every official is expected to uphold.”
“Elected representatives are meant to be role models, showing us all the importance of integrity, empathy, and respect. Engaging in violence not only breaks the bond of trust between leaders and the people they represent but sets a harmful example that can damage public confidence in our institutions.
“When public servants resort to acts of aggression, they are not only acting against the individuals involved but also against the values that hold our society together.
“Under Nigerian law, assault is clearly defined as an offense that has consequences. We must hold everyone to the same standards—particularly those entrusted with the privilege of representing their communities. Failing to address this incident would risk creating a culture of impunity, where those in power could feel above the law, while ordinary citizens are held to account.
“It is crucial that this incident be thoroughly investigated, and that any necessary steps be taken to ensure justice. This is not just about one individual’s actions but about reaffirming our commitment to respect, justice, and the rule of law. By holding our leaders accountable, we strengthen our democracy and set a standard that every Nigerian deserves to see reflected in their leaders.
“We urge the House of Representatives, APGA, and law enforcement agencies to treat this matter with the seriousness it deserves. Such actions should remind all leaders of the responsibility they bear to lead with integrity and respect, fostering a society where dignity and justice are upheld for every citizen,” Nwanoro further stated.
