ASHENEWS reports that the popular Gamboru market in Maiduguri, Borno state has been gutted by fire.
Though ASHNEWS could not immediately confirm the cause of the inferno, as of 3.35 pm, a source, Alamin Emmah said the fire was still raging with traders of the market watching helplessly. “Yes, the market has been on fire and is still burning!”
This online platform further reports that while some of the traders tried to evacuate their goods with the help of the operatives of Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), hoodlums were also caught carting away traders’ goods.
About four fire engines from the Federal Fire Service, the State Fire Service, the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) Fire Service, and the Government House, were deployed to quench the inferno.
Further inquiries indicated that there were two possible causes, including fire from a gas cylinder used by a tea, Indomie noddles seller; another possible cause, a source added, is maize, millets, and sorghum machine used in the market.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement from the government or Police.
ASHENEWS gathered that the state governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum was away in his hometown, Mafa, 45 killometres away from Maiduguri when the incident occurred.
