ASHENEWS reports that the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Sunday demanded the immediate prosecution of afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti who allegedly assaulted a police officer.
The PSC in a statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations decried that personnel of the Police Force were becoming victims of assault “at a time the Management of the Nigeria Police were dealing decisively with Officers who harass, intimidate or assault civilians on our roads and workplaces,”
According to the statement, the Chairman of the PSC, Dr. Solomon Arase had urged the Police to use the present incident to set an example that this will never be tolerated in Nigeria, a country governed by laws, rules, and regulations.
“no matter the offense the Police Officer committed, nobody, including Seun Kuti has the right to assault a Policeman in uniform and on official duty.
“Dr. Arase frowned at the effrontery of Seun to slap the Police Officer, insisting that Nigeria is not a Hobbesian state where might is right.
“We must as a civilized people explore established channels of complaints against alleged infractions by law enforcement officials rather than this uncouth behavior in assaulting the symbol of authority in our country” he noted.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, on Saturday, ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Kuti after he was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.
The IGP in a statement signed by CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi maintained that acts of contempt or disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book.
