The collaboration between activist groups and the Federal Government to undermine unions like the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is not just alarming, it’s downright shameful. How can those who claim to advocate for the marginalized turn a blind eye to the suppression of workers and academics? It’s a betrayal of the very principles they claim to uphold.

It seems like these so-called champions of social justice have forgotten what they stand for. Instead of fighting for the rights of the people, they have chosen to cozy up to those in power who seek to silence dissenting voices.

By aligning themselves with reactionary governments, these activist groups are not just selling out, they are actively contributing to the erosion of democratic values. They are complicit in the silencing of dissent and the perpetuation of power imbalances in society. It’s a sad state of affairs when those who are supposed to be fighting for justice end up being the enforcers of oppression.
It’s high time for these activist groups to wake up and smell the hypocrisy. They need to remember why they got into this fight in the first place and stand up for what is right. Collaboration with governments that seek to undermine basic rights and freedoms is a slap in the face to all those who have put their trust in them.

Activist groups need to get back to their roots and remember who they are fighting for. They need to resist the temptation to cozy up to those in power and instead continue to be the voice of the voiceless.
