The Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) has unveiled a roadmap to help farmers embrace climate-smart agriculture while exploring opportunities in carbon credit markets.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja, WOFAN Country Director, Dr. Salamatu Garba, said the initiative is part of efforts to promote sustainable agricultural practices and ensure Nigerian farmers benefit from global climate finance.
According to her, the meeting was designed to raise awareness, align strategic efforts, and identify pilot communities for implementing climate-smart innovations and carbon credit projects.
Dr. Garba noted that most farmers in Nigeria are still unaware of climate-smart agriculture and how to access carbon credit benefits, stressing that bridging this knowledge gap is critical. She said the roadmap would serve as a guide to help farmers adapt practices that not only boost productivity but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making them eligible for carbon credit incentives.
She explained that carbon credits provide financial rewards for adopting environmentally friendly practices, such as soil conservation, agroforestry, and reduced reliance on chemical inputs. This, she added, will not only improve farmers’ incomes but also contribute to global climate action.
WOFAN’s initiative is expected to build resilience among smallholder farmers, enhance food security, and position Nigeria as a player in the growing international carbon credit market.
