Value Seeds, a private agricultural organization, in partnership with the UK-funded Propcom+ programme, has unveiled new automated seed packaging lines aimed at lowering the cost of quality seeds and strengthening food security in Nigeria.
President of Value Seeds, George Zangir, disclosed this on Tuesday while inaugurating the new automatic seed packaging lines and conveyor belts in Bagaddi, Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
He said the partnership was designed to expand farmers’ access to certified seed varieties and accelerate the adoption of climate-smart agriculture across the country.
Zangir explained that support from the Propcom+ programme aligns with efforts to scale climate-smart practices, as the upgraded system boosts the distribution of nutrient-dense and drought-tolerant seed varieties.
According to him, the initiative is intended to reduce costs, expand access to quality seeds, and strengthen climate-smart farming nationwide.
“For more than 16 years, we relied on manual packaging for our small seed packs, which limited our capacity and increased operational expenses,” he said.
“Through our partnership with Propcom+, we now have fully automated lines that can package one million kilogrammes of seeds in two weeks instead of over a month. This translates into lower processing costs and more affordable certified seeds for farmers.”
Zangir added that Value Seeds has announced a 15 per cent reduction in the price of all field crop seeds for the next 12 months to ensure farmers directly benefit from the upgrade.
He noted that the partnership also enabled the company to expand its climate-friendly distribution network using clean electric vehicles and by stocking distribution centres across 10 states.
Local farmers and community leaders commended the intervention, saying it would help boost food production.
A farmer, Umar Sufyanu, said the collaboration would ease access to quality seeds at affordable rates, noting that high input costs had long been a major challenge for smallholders. The 15 per cent price reduction, he said, directly addresses this barrier.
Similarly, the Ward Head of Bagaldi, Sunusi Bamalli, praised the Value Seeds–Propcom+ partnership for promoting climate-smart and commercial agriculture in the area, saying the initiative would improve livelihoods and stimulate local economic growth.
