The Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has raised alarm over potential food security challenges in the state, calling on the government to take immediate action to mitigate the looming crisis.
At an emergency congress held at the Press Center on Saturday, November 16, the Union appealed to the state government to prioritize measures aimed at preventing food buyoffs from the state, especially to neighbouring countries, and to stockpile reserves in silos and warehouses.
These steps, the NUJ noted, are critical to cushioning the anticipated shortages that could arise in the coming months.
In the same vein, the Union lauded the state government’s initiative to provide subsidized rice to citizens but urged improvements in the distribution process.
Suggestions included ensuring uniform sales dates, establishing clear sales points, and strengthening monitoring mechanisms to prevent proxy purchases by unscrupulous traders.
The Congress also deliberated on internal union matters, including preparations for the forthcoming state delegate election, emphasizing fairness and decorum while addressing broader state issues such as minimum wage implementation, security, and firefighting preparedness during the harmattan season.
Signed by NUJ Chairman Dalhatu Abdullahi Safiyal-Magori and Secretary Muhammad Nasir Bello, the communiqué reflects the Union’s commitment to advocating for both the welfare of journalists and the larger Sokoto community.
