ASHENEWS reports that smallholder business women and men in Sokoto state have revealed that several households are currently grappling with the daily increase of essential food items, a situation that has plunged countless households into a financial and dietary crisis.
A foodstuff vendor, Mrs Ezeh Choima while speaking with ASHENEWS painted a grim picture of the current situation.
According to her, the prices of foodstuffs have increased so drastically that some goods are no longer economically viable to sell.
“Even staples like rice, beans, and garri have seen their prices double or even triple within a short span”, she stated.
Choima further laments that the profit margins shrinking to near non-existent as she and her fellow food sellers are desperately trying to weather the storm.
This, she said, has left both sellers and buyers grappling with the harsh reality of inflation and forced to make tough choices to meet their basic needs.
Mr. Idris Dauda, a provisions store owner, echoes Choima’s concerns.
As someone who deals daily with the basic provisions needs of the people at the grassroots, Dauda said that he has witnessed significant price hikes across various products.
He cited the popular milo, peak milk, and even tissue paper that have increased in recent times.
Dauda said he has observed a noticeable decline in sales as customers struggle to cope with the escalating costs.
The ripple effect of these skyrocketing prices has even reached the local eateries in Sokoto, like Mrs. Yada Dandawo’s restaurant.
The number of plates served has taken a nosedive as patrons feel the pinch of the economy.
What was once an affordable kilogram of chicken now commands a bewilderingly high price, alongside other essentials such as eggs and noodles.

Restaurant owners, like Yada, have been left with no choice but to sacrifice their profit margins to ensure what they charge for the food remains accessible to the struggling masses.
