Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to boosting food security through economic diversification by scaling up investments in agriculture.
Delta, like many regions in Nigeria, has long relied on a crude oil-led economy while underutilising opportunities in commercial crop farming and animal husbandry.
As part of efforts to transform the state’s agricultural sector, Oborevwori has inaugurated a high-level delegation to visit one of Brazil’s largest ranches, with a focus on development partnerships and attracting foreign investment.
A statement issued Saturday in Asaba said the Delta delegation had begun a working tour in Brazil, engaging ranch officials, inspecting agricultural facilities, and identifying areas for collaboration with agro-experts.
The visit aligns with the governor’s broader vision to diversify the economy, boost food production, and generate sustainable employment. Priority areas include livestock management, dairy production, pasture development, and agro-processing.
Dr. Barry Gbe, Chief Economic Adviser to the Governor and head of the delegation, said the state was committed to transforming agriculture through strategic alliances and the adoption of global best practices.
“Brazil is renowned for its advancements in livestock and ranching, and we believe that collaboration in this sector will bring immense benefits to our people,” Gbe said.
He explained that the administration aimed to adopt successful Brazilian agricultural models, strengthen local capacities, and attract direct investments into Delta for long-term growth.
The Brazilian hosts, led by Mr. Gustavo Monaco, welcomed the collaboration, noting Nigeria’s vast market and Delta State’s fertile landscape as strong advantages for sustainable agribusiness development.
Both parties agreed to continue discussions beyond the visit, exploring investment opportunities, agricultural knowledge exchange, and the integration of advanced technology into Delta’s farming systems.
Oborevwori said he hopes to position Delta as a leading agribusiness hub in Nigeria and West Africa by enabling investment, empowering local farmers, and embracing international expertise.
The delegation is expected to submit a comprehensive report with strategic recommendations for pilot ranching programmes and other agricultural projects across the state.
Delegates include: Mr. Val Arenyeka (Commissioner for Agriculture), Mr. Charles Aniagwu (Commissioner for Works – Rural Roads), Mr. Samuel Oligida (Commissioner for Trade and Investment), Mr. Anthony Elekeokwuri (DG, Investment Agency), and Mr. George Orogun (Investment Adviser).
